Bill Gates

William Henry Gates was born on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. As the principal founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates is one of the most influential and richest people on the planet. Recent estimates of his wealth put it at $56 billion, this is the equivalent of the combined GDP of several African economies. In recent years he has retired from working full time at Microsoft, and has instead has concentrated on working with his charitable foundation “The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation”

Bill Gates foundation of Microsoft

Bill GatesBill Gates founded Microsoft in 1976 when he formed a contract with MITTS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) to develop a basic operating system for their new microcomputers. In the early days Bill Gates would review every line of code. He was also involved in several aspects of Microsoft’s business such as packing and sending off orders.
The big break for Microsoft came in 1980 when IBM approached them for a new BASIC operating system for its new computers. In the early 1980s IBM was by far the leading PC manufacture. However, increasingly, there developed many IBM PC clones; (PCs developed by other companies compatible with IBM’s). Microsoft worked hard to sell its operating system to these other companies. Thus Microsoft was able to gain the dominant position of software manufacture just as the personal computer market started to boom. Since its early dominance, no other company has come close to displacing Microsoft as the dominant provider of computer operating software.

Bill Gates – Windows

In 1990 Microsoft released its first version of Windows. This was a break through in operating software as it replaced text interfaces with graphical interfaces. It soon became a best seller and was able to capture the majority of the operating system market share. In 1995 Windows 95 was released, setting new standards and features for operating systems. This version of windows has been the backbone of all future releases from Windows 2000 to the latest XP and Vista.
Throughout his time in office Bill Gates has been keen to diversify the business of Microsoft. For example Microsoft’s Internet Explorer became the dominant web browser, although this is mainly because it comes pre installed on most new computers, and in recent years has seen its market share slip.
One area where Microsoft has never been as successful is in the area of search engines. MSN live search has struggled to gain more than 5 % of market share. In this respect Microsoft has been dwarfed by Google. Nevertheless the success of Microsoft in cornering various aspects of the software market has led to several anti trust cases. In 1998 US v Microsoft, Microsoft came close to being broken up into three smaller firms. However on appeal Microsoft were able to survive as a single firm.

Philanthropic Activities – Bill Gates

Bill Gates is married to Melinda French (married in 1992). They have three children Jennifer (1996), Rory (1999) and Phoebe (2002). With his wife Bill Gates formed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill Gates says much of the inspiration came from the example of David Rockefeller. Like Rockefeller, Gates has sought to focus on global issues ignored by the government; he also expressed an interest in improving the standards of public school education in the US. He has appeared with Oprah Winfrey to promote this objective. In respect to charitable, philanthropic activities Gates has also received encouragement from investor Warren Buffet, who has given away $17 billion, through the Gates Foundation.
From 2008 Gates has worked full time on his philanthropic interests. It is estimated Gates and his wife Melinda have given away $28 billion via their charitable foundation – including $8 billion to improve global health.
Gates has said that he has no use for money, and will only leave a small percentage of his wealth to his children. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Gates states:
“I’m certainly well taken care of in terms of food and clothes,” he says, redundantly. “Money has no utility to me beyond a certain point. Its utility is entirely in building an organisation and getting the resources out to the poorest in the world.” (1)
His main areas of interest in philanthropy have been improving health, and in particularly helping to reduce diseases, such as polio which affect young children. He has also given more focus to environmental issues. In 2015, he gave $1 billion to a clean energy project, as he sees supporting new ‘greener’ technologies as a way to help deal with global warming.

The Legend of Makahiya

The Legend of Makahiya

Philippines

Long time ago, there was a couple in Barangay Masagna (Pampanga today) who wanted a daughter. Their wish was granted and the wife gave birth to a baby girl. They called her Maria. Maria was very beautiful but very shy that she wouldn't go out from their house.

Weeks later, Spaniards came to their town. The Spaniards was very cruel that they get everything they wanted. They rob houses and kill everyone who gets in their ways and who refuses to give what they wanted.

The couple was very frightened to lose their deughter, so they hid Maria in the bushes so the Spaniards couldn't find her.

After the Spaniards left their town, the couple tried to look for Maria but they couldn't find her even in the bushes where they hid her, instead they found a little plant that is very sensitive that when you touch it, it would immediately close.

So they thought it was their daughter, Maria. They called the plant "Makahiya" that means "touch me not", like their daughter who was very shy.

Uniqueness of Otter

Uniqueness of Otter
By

Otters in General
Otters are carnivorous mammals in the subfamily LutrinaeLutrinae is a branch of the weasel family Mustelidae, which also includes badgers, honey badgers, martens, minks, polecats, weasels, and wolverines.
Etymology
The word otter derives from the old English word otor or oter. This, and cognate words in other Indo-European languages, ultimately stem from the Proto-Indo-European languages root *wódr̥, which also gave rise to the English word "water”.
Life cycle
The gestation period in otters is about 60 to 86 days. The holt is built under tree roots or a rocky cairn, more common in Scotland. It is lined with moss and grass.
Terminology
An otter's den is called a holt or couch. Male otters are called dogs or boars, females are called bitches or sows, and their offspring are called pups. The feces of otters are typically identified by their distinctive aroma. After one month, the pup can leave the holt and after two months, it is able to swim. The pup lives with its family for approximately one year. Otters live up to 16 years; they are by nature playful, and frolic in the water with their pups. Its usual source of food is fish, and further downriver, eels, but it may sample frogs and birds.
Characteristics
Otters have long, slim bodies and relatively short limbs. Their most striking anatomical features are the powerful webbed feet used to swim, and their seal-like abilities holding breath underwater. They are notable for their ability to use stones to break open shellfish on their stomachs. This skill must be learned by the young. Otters are active hunters, chasing prey in the water or searching the beds of rivers, lakes or the seas. Otters are playful animals and appear to engage in various behaviors for sheer enjoyment, such as making waterslides and then sliding on them into the water.
Uniqueness
Otters hold on to each other while sleeping, so they won’t be separated <3

OSN Palu 2015

My Unforgettable Moment
“OSN Palu 2015”

            Hello, readers!
I would like to tell you about my unforgettable moment. When I was asked to write a story about it, in my mind there’s only OSN Palu 2015. So, please enjoy it.

For your information, I always like mathematics. I also like to join competitions and olympiads. When I was in grade seven, Alhamdulillah I was chosen to join city level of OSN (National Science Olympiad) after some tough selections against my own friends. I became the first champion and continued to the province level. Unluckily, I failed.

A year later, when I was an eight grader, after some very-tough selections especially against Yahya, I was chosen again. For the city level, I passed it and became the first champion. On the province level, I faced many difficulties. But, I didn’t get hopeless. Alhamdulillah Allah gave me a chance. I passed to the national level. Yeaahh!!!

National level of OSN 2015 was held in Palu, on 17-23 May. Few days before it, we participated in olympiad training at Wisma PU on Riau Street. It was really fun and it improved our skill. Finally, after this 4 days training, we left Bandung!

On Sunday, May 17, on 0 AM, we set out to Soekarno-Hatta Airport. After arriving, we departed to Palu. We arrive in Palu in the morning. I was really excited because it was the first time I visited Sulawesi Island. Then we went to the hotel by buses. We, mathematics participants, stayed at Sutan Raja Hotel, a 4-stars hotel. Meanwhile participats of the other sectors stayed at other hotels.

I’m really greatful. The hotel was so luxurious for me. The room that I shared with Willy, participant from Bangka Belitung, was so comfortable. I also liked the food. It was so delicious and healthy.

We spent a week there. On the first day, there was an opening ceremony which was legitimated by the governor of Central Sulawesi. There were also many great performance.

On the second and the third day, we participated in the competition. For me, it was really really difficult. I did my best to answer the questions and prayed to God to give me the best. On the fourth day, we were refreshing. We went to Tanjung Karang Beach. It was really beautiful and made me say “WOWW!!!”. I took some pictures, played banana boat, and had fun. I will never forget about it. What a really awesome experience!

On Friday, the fifth day, the winners were announced. I was nervous. I really wanted to be the champion. Sadly, I failed. On that moment, I was so sad and I only could take a deep breath. That was the feeling of losing.

World Tournament and Techno Festival 2016

World Tournament and Techno Festival 2016 is an event organized by OSIS SMAN 3 Bandung. It is a competition between 32018 and 32019 which is held at SMAN 3 Bandung, Lapangan Bali, and some others location on Saturday, August 20th 2016.

We were competing to collect pieces of puzzle in order to win against 32018 by winning the competitions. There were about 10 competitions. My class, X Science 10, won some of the competitions. We won Indomie-eating competition, Tekken game competition, intelligence competition, etc.

There were also the aliens. The aliens held some water ballons and they tried to throw the ballons to us. We had to give our puzzles to them if we got hit. We could also throw ballons to them and we could get puzzles they brought.

As the result of this event, 32019 was the winner. We completely collected all the puzzle pieces and form it into a big puzzle.

This World Tournament and Techno Festival was great. We had fun and improved our teamwork, intelligence, and nimbleness. I was happy to join this event...

MEGANTARA

The Great Megantara

SMAN 3 Bandung proudly presented a culture festival, Megantara.

Megantara is a culture festival organized by SMAN 3 Bandung. It was held on Saturday, September 10th 2016 at Lapangan Bali. We organize this kind of event annualy, for example Matswapati in 2014 and Gamarvani in 2015. Why culture festival, not art stage? Because SMAN 3 Bandung is trusted by the government to keep our culture everlasting.

The first agenda was a parade. Students of kindergarten around SMAN 3 Bandung were the participants. They wore unique costumes. After that, there were many others great performance, such as Rempak Kendang Darul Hikam, UKM Bali, Band, Jaipong Kontemporer, Lingkung Seni Sunda, MK, KV, Giri Harja, TST, OSD ITB, SPH Tari Kolaborasi, Karawitan and Fashion Show. There was also Kelompok Paduan Angklung performing their show very well.

Mayor of Bandung, Ridwan Kamil, came to give his appreciation and opinion about Megantara. He said that Megantara is a good event because it makes people know about their own culture.

For the last agenda, there were our guest star : The Changcuters and RAN. They performed perfectly and everybody enjoyed their performances.

The Changcuters

Megantara is really amazing. It is because of hardworks and teamworks of all the committees. I hope next year we can organize a better one...

Social Media

Essay Writing Competition
"Social Media"
By Raihan Fauzan

Source : kerjayuk.com

Hallo!
Dear readers, my name is Raihan Fauzan. I'm a student of SMAN 3 Bandung, Indonesia. I would like to express my opinion about one of  historical event that is really important : creation of social media, especially about its negative sides.

Now, social media is a primary need of human. People seem can't live without their social media. They use social media to communicate with others, to find information, and even to do their business. But, beside its positive side, I'm sure that social media has negative impacts. What are they? Here I will tell you my opinion about it :

1. Social Media Makes The Users Spend More Money
Users have to spend their money for the internet. Because if there is no internet, there is no social media. Social media also might make its users spend their money by buying things sold in it althought they don't them.
This kind of impact is really bad. If the users can't control theirselves, they might waste all their money stupidly only for interesting sale they see in social media.

2. Social Media Addiction
I think now most of people is addicted to social media. People make social media as one of their primary needs, seems like they can't survive without social media. Anywhere they go, anything  they do, and anytime, people must have social media with them.
This is bad. Users of social media shouldn't get addicted. Because if they do, they will waste their time stupidly and deprave their real life.

3. Cyber Crime
Crime that is done on the internet, in this case social media, is also called cyber crime. Bad guys abuse social media to do bad things. Kidnapping, deception, hacking, smugling, everything is possible to do with social media.
Of course, this problem is really dangerous. Technology is created in order to bring welfare to  human life. It mustn't be used for bad things. Cyber crime will only bring welfare to the doer, and it will harm many people.

4. Social Discrepancy and Privacy Problem
With social media, anything can be done. Users can post about where they are, what they eat, what they wear, and many other things. I think this is a serious problem. Posts on social media like that will only cause social discrepancy between the wealthy and the unwealthy to occur. Also, people can't keep their privacy if they post something like those.
These 2 problems need to be solved because they contravene ethic and norm of life.

Honestly, I still need social media everytime. But, I'm trying to reduce my addiction. I'm really concerned about the using of social media in the society. Most of them are still addicted and use social media unwisely.

Actually, social media has many positive sides if we use it wisely. So, don't use it too long and for bad things. Always remember that social media we use is created in order to bring welfare and goodness.

That's all from me. I hope my writing can bring advantage for me and for you all readers. Thank you for reading!

Why do I choose SMAN 3 Bandung?

SMAN 3 Bandung
Source : Science Two GO

Greetings, readers! This is my first English assignment. It's about the reason why I choose SMAN 3 Bandung to be my school. So, happy reading!

First, let me tell you about the first time I knew SMAN 3 Bandung. Since I was a student of elementary school, at SDN 2 Cimareme, my mom always tells me that I must think about my future, that I must have a good future, and that I must do my best for it. Even when I was a third-grade student, I've been had a plan to go to SMPN 1 Cimahi which is famous for its quality and it's said that SMPN 1 Cimahi is the best junior high school in Cimahi City and West Bandung Regency. I also heard from my aunt, my cousins, and my other relatives that SMAN 3 Bandung is the best senior high school in Great Bandung, even in West Java Province. But, they said that I also had another choice. It is SMAN 5 Bandung because it has good quality, too. Since that time, I decided that I must go to SMPN 1 Cimahi and SMAN 3 Bandung, and of course I must work hard to make my dreams come true.

Time ran. I became a sixth-grader. I was ready for the national exam. After I studied hard and prayed, I finally faced the exam and got a total score of 26,75. I was shocked knowing that I got scores lower than I expected. 26,75 is too low to be accepted at SMPN 1 Cimahi. But I wasn't hopeless. With the power of Bismillah, I registered to SMPN 1 Cimahi and I was accepted. It was a really wonderful gift from Allah.

There, I studied hard and joined OSN. I was chosen to be one of the participants of National Level of OSN 2015 which was held in Palu, Central Sulawesi. I was really greatful because that achievement could be a ticket for me to go SMAN 3 Bandung.

Time ran and ran. I became a ninth-grader and I had to work hard to get great scores on the national exam because my achievement was not a collateral for me. Finally I faced the national exam and Alhamdulillah I didn't fail. I got good scores, 383,5. Actually, I thought that my scores were enough for me to be accepted at SMAN 3 Bandung, bu I decided to register through 'jalur prestasi' using my achievement. Only 18 persons would be accepted through it, and that was hard for me and made me a little scared. But Alhamdulillah, I was accepted, made me really greatful and happy.

During the holiday before I go to school, I browsed the internet, searching about my new school. I read that there is an acceleration class where we can graduate in only 2 years. I was really excited about it and I decided to work hard so I can be accepted to that class.

Finally, the time that I had been waiting came. On July 16, I participated in the technical meeting of PLiST (Pengenalan Lingkungan Sekolah Tiga) 2016. We were given some tasks. On July 18. we participated in PLiST. It was really fun. I joined faction 3. We were told by our mentors about the story of SMAN 3, about the very-much-tasks, about the really-hard-tests, and many more. I'm ready. We were also taught about the motto of SMAN 3, "Knowledge is Power, but Character is More".

Now, I'm a part of class X-MIPA 10, a lovely and wonderful class. I love being in this class. I get many good friends.

So, that's all about my journey since I was in elementary school, until now I go to one of the best school in Indonesia. Please tell me if I make any mistakes on the comment below. Thank you for reading, readers!

Cheers!
